Not so Little Himself

I went to see Little Himself, aka Hjalti, yesterday only he is not so-little anymore.  Maybe I should change his nickname to Mahoosive Himself!

BN2A4112

The herd have been moved into their winter field and it is much easier to talk to Hjalti and Hetja now.

BN2A4114

He is still under the ever-watchful eye of his mother who lets nothing get past her – she is not bored of her little boy.  HJalti will not be weaned until the beginning of next year.

BN2A4132

I love watching the unique mother/foal bond.

BN2A4145

Like every parent and child, they have private conversations together.  If Hetja could, she would’ve spat on a corner of her hanky and wiped around his mouth!

BN2A4147

Hetja is very beautiful.  She has expressive ears.

BN2A4133

And I watched her “come hither” glances to Fakur.

BN2A4149

He, of course, is completely besotted with Hetja and can often be found baby-sitting a certain young gentleman.  He likes to think of himself as a family man.

BN2A4148

And Hjalti is into everything!

BN2A4141

He still very shy, however, but he managed to talk to me a few times.  He touched and sniffed me with his gorgeous soft velvety-silky nose that is made of something very special.  I felt blessed and loved.

Aurora, Milky Way and a Draconid

The Merrie Dancers made an appearance last night.  It was a clear still autumn night and I lugged my kit outside to try and capture the magic.

BN2A4085

It was not a huge display or, if it was, I missed it, but I managed to capture a few good photos.  If you look carefully to the right of the main light column, you will see what I think is a meteor from the Draconid meteor shower.

BN2A4086

It could, of course be a satellite, wobble or a fly, but I am telling myself that is a meteor.

BN2A4086-2

The aurora was not very long-lived but still, they are always wonderful to watch.

BN2A4088

I stood in the wet grass, listening to Lambie gently munching or acknowledging my presence (he is next door and yes, I did gently baa to him!)  Suddenly the peace and quiet was disturbed by frantic harsh barking – BeAnne had located a hedgehog.  She has a special high-pitched bark for them.

We called her off.

BN2A4093

I stayed for a while longer, hoping the Northern Lights would return but they didn’t.  In the meantime, I pointed my camera straight upwards, rather than to the north, and took photos of the Milky Way.

It was an experiment and, at one stage, the one kit almost fell over with the weight of the lens. I luckily caught it in time with the dangling remote control.

BN2A4105 BN2A4110

I upped the contrast on this last photo to reveal this.  I am not sure, again, whether they are stars or just the photo getting grainy.

I thought it looked a bit Star Trekkie myself.

Calm after the Storm

After all the rain, I thought I would start my learning-to-walk-nicely-on-the-road training with The Minions but when I went to catch one, I saw that they were all asleep, so I felt guilty and left them.

The bad weather is always exhausting for everyone.

BN2A4019 BN2A4020

Instead, I took the dogs out for their walk by themselves (plus Lambie and Lambert who spotted me leaving from the hill and came running).  They were very enthusiastic and there was running, bouncing as well as trying to butt each other into ditches!

Loki disowned us and went off to catch a rabbit.

Afterwards, I went down into the Fat Field to see how everyone was.  No one was very keen to talk to me as there was eating to do before I changed my mind and moved them all back to their original field, that doesn’t have as much grass.

BN2A4073

I could not see Taktur in the field, so shouted his name and he popped up from behind a dry stone wall.

BN2A4027

He is very handsome and easy to work with.  A real gentleman.

BN2A4037

The Minions had crept under an adjoining fence to the next field, where they almost invisible in the long grass.

BN2A4036

The weeds are the same size as Silver.

BN2A4049

Tiddles was on good form but he had eating to do and that took precedent over everything else.

BN2A4071

Tiddles and Storm are still the best friends one year on and that is just what I wanted when I agreed to give him a home, last winter.

BN2A4072

It was a lovely afternoon after all that rain/wind.  Everyone was enjoying it and I didn’t get too involved as I though they were tired and just wanted to be left alone.  Still, I had a few nose kisses!

BN2A4069

rainfall, fall, showers, deluge, drizzle, downpour, precipitation, raindrops, cloudburst

damp,  soaked,  soaking,  dripping,  saturated,  drenched,  watery,  soggy,  soddenwaterlogged, dank,  sopping,  aqueous,  wringing wet

We have had a vile 24 hours of endless rain and wind with another 24 hours more rain to come.

I knew the storm was coming.  I put all the horses into the Fat Field so they would have food in their bellies and shelter if they wanted it.

BN2A4017

Yesterday was spent mostly indoors except when there was a brief respite after lunch when I managed to get Taktur up to feed.

Today, the weather forecast said it would clear up at 10:00 and at exactly 10:00 the endless rain stopped and the wind died down.  Most odd but I wasn’t going to argue so I made the most of it and went out to check that everyone was ok.

BN2A3993

Hjalti and his mother, Hetja, were in the middle of their field with the rest of their herd, oblivious of the weather.

BN2A3995

At the top of the hill is a large dip where they often shelter.

BN2A3997

Esja (greyer blob in the middle) was happy enough and I left her to it rather than interrupt the important task of eating.

BN2A3998

She has enough fat on her anyway to keep her warm.

BN2A3999

Raw Deal, Vitamin and Lyra were at the corner of their field near the road so I threw some carrots at them.

BN2A4007

While soaked, they all seemed happy enough.

BN2A4009

So I am not concerned anymore.  It always sounds far worse when you are lying in bed listening to the screaming wind and hammering rain in the wee small hours.

BN2A4015

I worry someone might melt (and yes, Storm has a rug on because he must not melt – he wouldn’t like that)!

Getting to know you….

Lambie is still nervous of the ponies. He is better with the bigger horses as they are not remotely interested in him.  But he suspects that The Minions have evil thoughts!

BN2A3725 BN2A3726

As he is not the brightest star in our firmament, Lambie tends to run off the minute they look at him.

BN2A3718

Lambert doesn’t care and is far more laid back about everyone.  I suppose he goes with the theory that by looking like a brown woolly maggot, no one will be interested.

BN2A3728

After a small discussion together, ….

BN2A3894

Lambie and Lambert decided to be The Masters of Disguise!

BN2A3863

Storm can set everyone off (running) by fiddling about in the school, and creating trouble.

BN2A3745

He creeps up on the sheep pretending he just happens to be in the area.

BN2A3854

Having lulled them into a false sense of security, Silver will then swoop in from nowhere which is too much for Lambie and he rushes over to us for safety.

BN2A3860

Flossie was offering Lambie therapy after his last Shetland pony “shock”.  As Joyce Grenfell said “It’s alright, Dolores, you weren’t hurt, just surprised”.

I am tempted to call Lambie “Dolores” from now on!

BN2A3870

Storm does not give up his investigations easily.

BN2A3873

He snuck up realising he would have to take things more gently if he wanted to get to know these woolly maggots!  BeAnne was prepared to give him a telling off if he over-stepped the mark.  Tis her job.

BN2A3875

So Storm was on his best behaviour.

BN2A3877 BN2A3883

He even let Flossie lean against him while he pretended we are just one happy family!

BN2A3887

We are all working very hard on our special skills!

(By the way, don’t you think Storm is looking absolutely fabulous and well?  A proper shaped pony this year.  I am very pleased.)
