After the Ball… (s)

Tiddles and Storm spent last night together in the stable while Tiddles got over his anaesthetic.  They were let out in the morning and I put them in a field where Tiddles could recuperate and eat.

However, Storm had other ideas.  He cantered about deliberately annoying Tiddles, showing him that he was fine and he didn’t hurt.  He was trying to get Tiddles to play with him.

BN2A5348

Tiddles was appalled at this thought.  It was enough that he could walk without going ow, ow, ow and Storm was really beginning to annoy him (which is a complete turnabout from yesterday pre-op, when he hung onto Storm to the point where the vet thought he was stuck!)

BN2A5353

Storm was being A Pest and he had no intention of stopping either.  So I made a quick decision and went and fetched Silver and Waffle to “dilute” Storm’s playfulness.

BN2A5361 BN2A5363

The Gods were smiling and obviously understood Tiddles’ problem as Waffle and Silver were waiting by their gate and didn’t need asking twice.  They would’ve put on their own headcollars.

BN2A5366

Things started a little raucously but everything soon quickly calmed down.

BN2A5367 BN2A5368 BN2A5373

I stayed in their field for a while, just in case, but it was very obvious that everyone just wanted to get down to the task of eating.

BN2A5382 BN2A5391

Even Storm stopped being a prat and was back to being Tiddles’ BFF again rather than constant irritation!

BN2A5379

Lambie and Lambert are doing well, post-op (thank you for asking).

BN2A5400

Poor Lambie has ulcers on his eyes and has twice daily eyedrops.  Healing vibes for Lambie.  It is horrid for him.

(I think you can guess where I spent my morning)

On another note, we are now five testicles less at Thordale.  Tiddles was gelded.  Lambie was successfully castrated but sadly Lambert was not.  He has a retained testicle lurking somewhere so he needs a general anaesthetic and laparotomy.  Hopefully the vets will locate the errant ball and remove it.  All the boys were very good and I am glad it has been done.  A necessity that needed doing.  So fingers crossed for Lambert.  We will attempt this in ten days.

I know, I know, why would I waste my money on a GA for a sheep, but Lambert is Lambie’s best friend and they are my responsibility.  A monorchid sheep is a liability when you live in the middle of the scattald (open hill).  So, it will be done because that is what needs to happen.

So all the boys are walking a bit funny around Thordale today!

The Softest Nose

I went to see Hetja and Little Himself (still no name) this morning after walking the dogs on the beach.  The dogs understood and stayed out of the field while I went in, only to find Hetja on her own.

Yes, I panicked.

BN2A5058

And then I stopped when I saw a pair of little spikey lugs appear.

BN2A5059

Little Himself stood up and instantly looked gorgeous.

BN2A5061

He had his lunch while Hetja patiently waited for the carrots she knew I would bring.

BN2A5066

Every time I see Little Himself, I am blown away with just how perfect he is.  He is wow!

BN2A5073

You can see that he is growing his first teefs!  Poor Hetja – I bet she can feel them.

BN2A5081

And he is eating grass too – mostly sampling, I think.

BN2A5083 BN2A5115

After the carrots, Hetja walked off and her son dutifully followed.

BN2A5126

Hetja settled down to the important job of eating while Little Himself wanted to look at me….

BN2A5091

And think ……

BN2A5137

So I sat on the ground and waited to see what would happen.

BN2A5144

Joy of joys, Little Himself decided he wanted to talk to me.  I slowly rested on my haunches, put down the camera, stretched out my hand, looked at the ground, rounded my shoulders and I felt this soft, soft velvety nose touch my hand.

BN2A5149

There is no nose in this world softer.  It was better than silk, velvet, the finest material.  Just soft and warm and a little tickly.  I looked up and my heart melted even more.

BN2A5151

I was officially introduced.

BN2A5155

And then he went back to Hetja and I came home feeling very honoured.

BN2A5158

Now, what is Icelandic for small soft nose?

Foal Fur

As you know, or even may not, every year I sell yearling foal fur to fund my Shetland Foal Milk Service (supplying orphan foals with foal milk) or the day-to-day running of The Minions.

Recently, I was given this wonderful little chap by a regular Shetland visitor who took the wool from last year, spun it and created my dream pony!

Isn’t he wonderful?  He is perfection.

The main body is made of Silver, his hooves are Waffle and his mane is mostly Storm.  I love him.  I think he should be called Staffvler!

L1170223

This is the rest of Silver’s foal fur beautifully spun and ready to be used.

L1170225

The black and white ball is a mixture of Storm and Waffle.  Very clever..

L1170230

So that was the three original Minions for once being useful!

BN2A4862

And now I have a pocket-sized one!

L1170231

He has the same hair-do and darling expression too!

L1170232

Next it is Tiddles’ turn to donate as he is the only foal we have from last year.

BN2A4828

His coat is very thick and we have done some brushing/combing but on Friday, when he is being gelded (please do not mention this to him), his belly fur will be shaved off too.

L1170238

So far I have three buckets of the stuff so if you are interested, give me a shout. I will be packaging it up soon into bags.

The Equi-Dentist Today

Stuart Huggan, our equi-dentist, came over today to see the Icelandic horses.

First up was Taktur, our stallion, but as I was holding him, there was no one to man the camera. He was a good boy, though, and took it all in his stride.

We did bring him some moral support, but they were too busy to take an interest.  Probably just as well.

BN2A4948

Next up was Kappi.  He has never, to our knowledge, seen a dentist and he was beautifully behaved.

BN2A4955

As Stuart doesn’t come up to Shetland very often, I asked if he had time to see a few more…..

I love Haakon’s face. He knows he is next in the dentist’s queue and I am ashamed to say that, out of all of the horses, he made the most fuss by rearing a few times – at least 4″ off the ground.

BN2A4959

BeAnne took to her bed in disgust.

BN2A4956

Iacs didn’t mind Stuart in the slightest.  Anything that might help the passage of food go down faster or easier is considered a necessity in his book.  No pain, no gain!

BN2A4964

Klængur was another wary one but, as I was there and he trusts me 100%, he had perfect manners.

BN2A4966 BN2A4968

Stuart was kind enough to say that my horses were easy and very well behaved.  All I could think was thank God, I hadn’t got the Minions out!  I will save them for another time.

Afterwards, I took arty-farty photos of Haakon with the garden lupins (don’t worry, he can’t reach or eat them – they are much further away than they look).

BN2A4976

BeAnne had a windswept moment so I captured that too.

BN2A5002

This was take just standing in the garden! How the Shetland wind always blows!
