A Shetland Autumn

Shetland in Autumn is special.

It is my favourite season.

So, this morning, after a lovely ride on Haakon accompanied by my two daughters on their Icelandic horses, I went out to collect a prescription from my doctor.  Afterwards I decided to go for a little drive about with my camera.

I didn’t go very far.  Just around the block, so to speak.

The rain was coming in too.

I saw many things I have never noticed before.

If the rain was not on its way, I would’ve stayed out for longer.

I enjoy driving around, watching the world or being watched – whichever.

I see these views most days but, as the light changes, so do the colours.

Driving through the scattald (open hill) is always an adventure.

This landscape is a mixture of sandstone and granite.

Foula was looking mysterious today.

Enjoy the views.  I always do.

I was reading (a little) about Foula and it’s being used as the setting for at least two movies that actually were about St. Kilda. Both Interesting places. In reading a bit more of the peoples and animals of Foula, I learned that that was where Shetland ponies actually come from (other than they’re parents). Is that really true?

We’ll probably not be able to visit Foula, but it is truly beautiful!

I don’t know what it is, because I love the mountains & forest environments, but Shetland has a wild beauty that stirs my soul. You capture it so beautifully.

As always – exquisite, evocative photos. Shetland is such a beautiful place and we found the people very warm and welcoming. Missing the big skies and the reestit soup. Thank you for giving us our daily dose of Shetland’s loveliness. Hope life is a bit less hectic for you, now that show season is over?

Beautiful! Kate Davies (a knitwear designer and writer, who lives near the Scottish Highlands and has her own line of 100% Scottish wool yarn) wrote a book in 2012 called “Colours of Shetland.” Tom Barr, her husband, is a wonderful photographer who recently produced the book “Shetland Oo.” Both of these books are sold by Jamieson & Smith. Your lovely photos are another testimony to the simple beauty of Shetland. Thank you!
PS I love the two sheepies who are watching you!

Beautiful! We are making our final preparations for flying to the UK and I’m looking forward to meeting you and your croft!
