So How Old Is He?

When Daisy and I first met Monster in April 2018, we were told he was approximately 2 – 4 years old.  Our Shetland vet at the time and I disagreed with this estimate and thought he was more like 6 – 8 years old as Monster was one big confidant cat who did not look like he had just been around for a couple of years.

Meet n’ Greet – Day 1 at the SSPCA – on his throne

Does this look like a 2 year old cat to you?

First day at home

I don’t know. I suppose Monster could’ve been 2 – 4.  He had been a Tom cat (swiftly neutered by the SSPCA) and certainly built like one.

So that brings us swiftly to 2026.  By my calculations, we’ve had Monster for 8 years (of total joy, obviously) so at best he is 10 – 14 years old but these days we are all noticing that Monster is getting increasingly stiff when he gets up out of his many beds and I think he might be older than we were told – more like 16.

And I know there are supplements like Yumove for cats but they are all fish-based and he absolutely loathes all fish so I am not sure what the answer is.

I do not know the age of my cat either. I took him in as an an adult stray, no record of his background, only a ripped ear to suggest living rough and of course not neutered. He had no problem adapting to life as a house pet and has doubled his size.

Here in the US I have always put my old animals on DASUQUIN when they started getting stiff in their joints and it does help. It is a capsule which you break and sprinkle the power on the food.

I didn’t see other comments so I’m not sure whether you have already heard about this. My dog took an injectable for her arthritis which seemed to really help her. Our vet said there was one for cats too. I don’t remember the names, but I’m sure your vet would know of them. Best of luck and prayer for Monster and I continue to pray for pain relief for you too.

Oh that’s interesting. Thank you. I have just bought him a new snuggly bed and once it arrives, I will measure it for a weight-activated heat pad.

I would say Monster at least 3 in first photo. However, as to his age now, it has to be whatever he feels – individual cats age differently.

Our vet recommended Solensia injections. We tried it once, but it didn’t seem to work. Our cat was very old, though with other ailments and broken kidneys. It was just too late for everything. Others reported success . “Solensia (frunevetmab) is a groundbreaking, FDA-approved medication designed to manage pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in cats. It is the first monoclonal antibody therapy for feline arthritis, providing long-lasting pain relief through a monthly injection. “
