The Cunningsburgh Show

The Cunningsburgh Show is an open show, ie anyone from anywhere in Shetland can enter.

We arrived early, very early, with some Bergli Stud ponies, as requested.

At 08:00, the show field was busy filling up with various agricultural entries.  Judging started at 09:00 in most sections.

The Shetland pony ring started with a variety of riding classes.

BN2A7908

Ridden classes play a very important part in a Shetland pony Show and are not to be dismissed as insignificant.

BN2A8143

Bergli Stud had helpers, as well as Flossie and I, and we all spent as much time as possible in getting to know everyone we would be working with.

BN2A7911BN2A8087

There was no slacking.

BN2A7929

We each had a job and knew what to do – no, mine was not to steal the silver!

BN2A7989

My job was to take photographs and I was particularly enchanted by Julie Williamson of Benston Stud who very determinedly showed her ponies.

BN2A7964

Bless her, there were moments when we could only see 6 legs + 2 plus 4

BN2A7958BN2A7977

The judges in the Standard ring and the Miniature ring were kept busy.

BN2A8016

The majority of classes were well attended.

BN2A8084

Some lovely ponies were winning.

BN2A8109

After the majority of classes, I pottered around with my camera taking photos of anyone with a red rosette.

BN2A8146

At the Shetland Agricultural shows, there are classes for everything.

BN2A8150

Even potatoes on a plate!

BN2A8151

This is my favourite class.

BN2A8159

I think it sums the whole show up.

BN2A8160   BN2A8168 BN2A8175 BN2A8187 BN2A8194

By the afternoon, I was exhausted.  Everyone had worked very hard and the results were beginning to show.

BN2A8312

Anyone who had volunteered their help, was roped into showing.  Even Flossie (so proud ** sniff **)….

BN2A8375

and me (so going on a diet, *** sniff ***).

BN2A8391

At the end of the day Bergli Stud did very well.

BN2A8474 BN2A8477 BN2A8485

They deserved it.

BN2A8500

I doubt few can appreciate the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes – training, washing, more training, etc.

BN2A8514

Having won the Shetland Pony Championship and the Reserve Championship, then there was the Show Championship to go for.

Now it was a free for all……

Champion sheep.

BN2A8560

Champion Cow

BN2A8576

Champion Chicken

BN2A8578

Champion Dog

BN2A8590

They were all pitched against each other.

BN2A8632

And, guess what, Bergli Stud, won the Cunningsburgh Agricultural Show Champion trophy with Brunatwatt Madeleine Magic.

BN2A8666

A good day but an exhausting one.

And so to bed.  Floss and I were up at 06:00 and that is not normal, for me.

But, before I go to bed, I want to say that none of this would’ve been possible without Daisy and OH holding the fort (and Lambie’s hooves) at home as well as creating a delicious supper for us to come home to.  True teamwork.

Thank you everyone xx

Lying Little Boysenberries

If you ask my daughters, they will tell you there is one thing I hate…….

BN2A7849

Liars (as well as trotting downhill, wet cotton wool and the word “moist”).

BN2A7851

These two little sheepy people are liars.

BN2A7852

If they had pants, they would be on fire.

BN2A7854

Not that they care and not that they wear pants.

BN2A7856

(that I know of)

BN2A7857

My fingers are in my ears and I am singing very loudly La-di-la at the thought of sheep in pants.

BN2A7863

Anywho, this morning, Flossie was out the front door first to feed Albie his big breakfast.

BN2A7867

To date, Floss has never fed anyone else.

BN2A7869

A few minutes later, I went outside and met two poor half-starved sheeps close to death from starvation.

BN2A7871

I asked Lambie and ‘Ster if they wanted brekkie and they put on their best winning smiles to say they had had nothing, so I fed them.

BN2A7872

Meanwhile, Flossie was feeding Albie and all was well on that side of things.

BN2A7878

Once finished Albie’s breakfast, Flossie went indoors. As a parting shot, Flossie mentioned that she had already fed Lambie and ‘Ster.

BN2A7883

Words failed me. Little lying sheeps.

BN2A7893

How could they?  Based on their usual routine, they had told untruths through their bottom layer of teeth without any hint of moral verisimilitude,

BN2A7867

I thought I had brought them up better than that.

BN2A7869

Obviously not.

BN2A7871

I found both Lambie and ‘Ster lying down digesting and cudding looking as if they were about to burst.

BN2A7872

I refused to feel sorry for them.

BN2A7878

I hope this doesn’t become a habit.

BN2A7883

Sadly, as Muzzah, I know these two sheepie people will try to repeat their actions as it means double breakfasts.

BN2A7893

Darling little Boysenberries – I love them very much.

BN2A7897

But I also know them very well.

BN2A7901

Little liars with combustible underwear!

BN2A7902

A Wu Day

Today is a day of shite – the wind is blowing (almost a gale and far too early for the time of year) and there is fierce sporadic rain.  No one wants to go outside, although I flogged down the road and back again with the dogs, hoping they would consider it a walk – luckily, they did.

This is the kind of day that is a Wu Day, ie he is my main model as I refuse to take any camera outside and the dogs refuse to pose.

Yes, I am busy making the above pictures (apart from the fridge one) into greetings cards on Zazzle – who knows, there could be a market?!

I told you it was raining!

Direwolf Fur

Background Story:  In 1979, I was sent to a another new boarding school, St George’s School, Ascot.  I shared a room with a girl called “Bermuda” (Michele).  We have been friends ever since, thanks to Facebook.

So, yesterday, I received in the post a packet postmark Bermuda.

L1220745

Michele has two beautiful “Direwolves”, Savvy and Devon.

IMG_1240IMG_1366Photo EL2283 (1)

I have been nagging Michele to send me some of fur when Savvy and Devon are brushed/stripped.

IMG_0554

If you are a fan of Game of Thrones (both books by George R. R. Martin and HBO’s tv series), then you will know that the Northern Inuit Dog breed were used to portray the Direwolves given to each of the Stark children when they lived at Winterfell.

Savvy and Devon have kindly donated their fur to the Brisk/Minion Fund.

L1220750

I got the fur out the bag to weigh and it was so soft and beautiful.  It sat Tribble-like on our kitchen scales.

L1220751

It weighs in at 2 oz or 56.699 grams.

L1220753

What shall I do with it?  Put it on Fleabay or does anyone want to make me an offer for this unique and rare “Direwolf” fur belonging to Savvy and Devon who, by the way, are wonderful kind dogs.

IMG_0101

A titten, look a little titten!

IMG_0490

Oof, titten and nosey and dogs.  I want them all with me now (free to a good home, Wu, BeAnne and Loki).

IMG_0543

Let me know what you want me to do.  All suggestions (legal, decent, honest and truthful) appreciated.

By the way, if you want to see just how beautiful these dogs are, Savvy took part in an amazing photoshoot by Sacha Blackburne.

I confess that I am not a huge fan of other folk’s photography (mostly out of pure jealousy) but Sacha’s pictures are incredible and I am constantly inspired by her work – Sacha Blackburne Photography

It’s a Hard Life

I try to check the little herd in Sandness daily but, if I don’t, there are folk who keep an eye for me and would let me know if anything was wrong.  This is the first time the MInions have been away from home and they miss their hugs and us so we all like to go as often as we can to spend time with them in their field.

BN2A7816

Today, Daisy volunteered to come with me.

After checking the water trough had clean fresh water, we found a dryish spot and sat down in the field (yes afterwards we had wet bottoms) and waited.

It didn’t take long.

BN2A7818

Poor Daisy – what a chore.

BN2A7820

How she suffers.  Perhaps I work her too hard?

BN2A7823

So, after a day of endless hugging, I suddenly went all black and white because, for me, it is something different and I was feeling very slightly arty-farty.

BN2A7826 BN2A7828 BN2A7830 BN2A7831 BN2A7833 BN2A7836 BN2A7841 BN2A7844

Anywho, I think my arty-fartyness may be over now.  It was a phase.  I have them occasionally.
