Show Day 2 – Vintage Day

Saturday is always the Show Day and Sunday is “Vintage Day” – this is a show of Vintage Cars, Motorbykes, Tractors and Land Rovers.

So I wandered around with my little camera enjoying looking at an amazing array of machines and meeting their owners.  I had no idea these vehicles existed up here in Shetland, where everything rusts (due to the high salt content in the air) the minute it can if it stands more than ten minutes outside.

L1170680

But these automobiles do live up here, obviously loved, cosseted and kept under wraps in cotton wool away from the harsh environment.

L1170655

This is obviously a labour of love, necessity and commitment.

L1170656

Anywho, I hope you enjoy the photos.  I pottered about while they arrived and were parked in various rows around the Walls show ground.

And then, of course, it started to think about raining.  Luckily for everyone and their cars, it held off.

The rest of the photos are in sepia because I thought that was more evocative of the date of the cars (and I wanted to have a play with my camera!)

There was also a Fun Run arranged from 12 noon.  Sadly, I considered myself a bit too “vintage” for this!

L1170735

Anyway, it makes a change from ponies, if you were getting bored of them!

The 2015 Walls & District Agricultural Show

Today is Show Day!  I know this because it rained.

Three lovely girls have Andy, Charlie and Fivla on loan and they took them to the show. They entered a variety of classes with their ponies, both in-hand and ridden.

The ponies are old hands (or should that be hooves?) at this showing thing and take it all in their stride.  I think the judge was impressed with the girls’ superb turnout and wonderfully clean ponies.

There were the usual exhibits.

And the unusual ones as well.

The rain managed to keep away and it was a fun day for everyone.

Everyone always enjoys the Walls Show.  It is a highlight in our social calendar..

A Family First!

Firstly, apologies for crap photos – on iPhone!

We all went out for a ride this morning.

BeAnne in her Beankini, me on Haakon……

Daisy rode Klaengur and Flossie on Iacs.

IMG_0165

It was wonderful and something that happens very rarely.  Two adult daughters are never usually here together.

Daisy and Klaengur were fine at the front.  I didn’t have to worry about them.

While Floss, Iacs and BeAnne pottered along happily at the back.  Iacs looked after Flossie beautifully.  He knows his job.

IMG_0177

For me, it is always lovely to see Flossie on a horse – this is not her idea of a natural pastime, though she does enjoy it, once onboard, and wants to learn more, like how to be in control rather than an optimistic passenger!

IMG_0189

When we got home, I started to give Flossie a riding lesson in the indoor school.  Daisy soon took over as she knows Iacs well and she was much better than me.  Now this is a first for everyone!

IMG_0193

It was a superb lesson – Daisy instructed and Flossie listened, trying to do her best to achieve what was being asked of her and Iacs.

IMG_0195

I had to go outside as this was between the two (or three) of them and my presence was not needed. I may have had something in my eye too – if you know Daisy and Flossie, you will realise what a big deal this is!

So I sat outside with my own little Fan Club.

(Lambie has turquoise tetracycline spray on his face as an old Loki bite went septic).

I am hoping that this riding lesson business might become a regular thing between Flossie and Daisy for the next few weeks.

Bring on the tissues for me, please!

Youngest Home

Flossie is home for good from Beijing, China.  She did her year out there attending Peking University and came home yesterday morning, minus her suitcase (please find it British Airways).

L1170453

We are all thrilled to see her.

L1170496

Today, Flossie came with me to walk the dogs down the road – I have to stay on the flat as much as possible these days because of my back.

L1170503

Afterwards, we went out to see the horses in their field.

L1170507

Klaengur has always adored Flossie.

L1170524

There is non-verbal communication just between themselves.

L1170531

An inner calm when they are together.  Suddenly, the rest of the world does not exist.

L1170533

Anywho, I am thrilled to have my baby back – yes, she will always be my baby, even though she is 19 years old.

L1170536

A year is a very long time away for us all.

Now, I wonder if I can get her on a horse…….!

Not Getting On

Hetja is still not letting Aria’s foal, Jubilation, near Hjalti.

Not now, not never.  He and his mum are chased off all the time, which is very sad for both the foals. We have tried for a while now, and nothing changes.

BN2A8812

The four Icelandics (Fákur and Tór (geldings) plus Hreyfing and Sparta (mares)) were over the road having previously disgraced themselves by escaping into the hill the evening before.

Hetja was very pleased to see her old herd/friends.

BN2A8770

As was Hjalti, who was intrigued.

BN2A8750

He was desperate to make friends, and this time Hetja was not trying to stop him.

BN2A8751  BN2A8768

So a decision was made.  Aria and Jubilation, who obviously would never be allowed to mix, were moved to another field, while the Icelandic renegades were moved in with Hetja and Hjalti.

And, instantly, a tentative peace reigns.  Ok, Hetja did some warning and raging, but not half as much as she did with Aria.

We will see how they get on. Little bebbies love Nuncle Fákur.  They are drawn to him and I don’t think it will be long before Hetja lets him babysit!

BN2A8754

Btw, thank you for your healing vibes.  Lambert is doing very well – eating and drinking, though still a bit sore and wary of folk.  I am very happy.
