The Corruption of Efstur

The time has come.

bn2a6016

When we introduced Efstur to carrots.

bn2a6018

He wasn’t sure and spat the first one out.

bn2a6020

But luckily he had some advice from an old “addict”.

bn2a6023

The carrot crunching is loud and Hjalti appeared out of nowhere to assist in the corruption and/or education.  It all depends on your perception of the evils of carrots.

bn2a6029

And so it begins.

bn2a6031

Once the bag of carrots was finished, then other rewards were on offer.  Lots of scratches and kisses (Note the beards.  The boys have great winter beards!)

bn2a6038

Hjalti has taught Efstur so much.  They are the best of friends and it is lovely to see.  Just what we wanted.

bn2a6051

Efstur is growing his long shaggy winter coat now.  He is growing all the time.

bn2a6058

He is a very affectionate little chap and learning his manners.

bn2a6061

This herd environment is perfect for him.

bn2a6066

But he is also still a baby.

bn2a6078

Brá is a very good mother. She loves her son but she wants him to have his independence. Of course, should anything happen that she disapproves of, she wades in, but mostly she leaves him to his own devices, letting him come back to her when he wants.  The perfect mother.

bn2a6081

Little Hjalti is now becoming Big Hjalti.

bn2a6096

Hetja is happy to have him with her and they still have a strong mother-son bond.

bn2a6119

He is very useful too.

bn2a6121

So, this winter we will work with Efstur and Hjalti.  We still have Headcollar Wars to win (just for the vet to put in his microchip).  I am hoping his new love of carrots may help.

When in doubt, bribe!

bn2a6127

Tis always the answer!

Best Shetland Pony Filly Foal in Shetland 2016

Meet Bergli Gloria.

bn2a5726

She is the best Shetland pony filly foal in Shetland 2016 and that is a seriously nice silver rose bowl that she has won.

bn2a5706

This is her mother – Bluemull Roseblossom.

bn2a5756

You may remember her.  This was Roseblossom in March 2015.  She was the mare we nursed through hyperlipaemia.

img_0623

During her horrible illness, she aborted her foal (a strong colt) which physically probably saved her life but mentally hit her hard.  Afterwards, after careful thought and consideration, she ran with Wulfert v.d. groote woerd 528 009 05 1119553 (Waffle’s Sire).

This spring she had a beautiful filly foal.  She was thrilled.  Everything was back to normal.

bn2a1438

Darling little Gloria.

bn2a5766

And if anyone says to you that Shetland ponies just can’t move like bigger horses and ponies,  well then……

bn2a5778

…. perhaps refer them to watch Gloria in action.

bn2a5784

This little lady floats with ears pricked and a smile on her face!

bn2a5959

Stunning, absolutely stunning.

bn2a5806

So effortless.

bn2a5813

Serious wow!

bn2a5868

I could watch her all day.

bn2a5867  bn2a5885

And she has the most delicious little canter too.

bn2a5920bn2a5850

Roseblossom deserves to be happy after all the hell that she went through last year and she is.  She has the most beautiful, talented little girl.

bn2a5985

The best in Shetland.

bn2a5987

I am not surprised.  The trophy is well deserved.

bn2a5901

On the way home, Foula was looking magical.

bn2a6002

I never pass up an opportunity to take photos of Foula when it is looking special.

bn2a6006

Dear Little Fivla

Darling little Fivla is doing brilliantly.

Every morning, while Daisy is feeding Albie his breakfast and Tor her snack, Fivla and I run around the indoor school to workout music for 20 minutes.

bn2a5114

We have moved onto trotting poles now to get Fivla’s shoulders up, loosened and those little legs working fast.

Fivvie spent many years in the riding school and has perfected the art of using the least amount of energy for any task and if you are not watching, she just potters to a stop.

bn2a5115

She could trot round and round the school for eternity with her feet barely lifting the ground expending very little energy.

bn2a5117

She has had many years of practice wearing small children.

bn2a5128

Sadly we can’t let her do this.

bn2a5140

Exercise = calories burned = thinner (hopefully).

bn2a5148

So, this is Fivla’s morning workout.  She only trots over the poles a few times in both directions and the rest is a walking warm-up and a walking cool down.

bn2a5163

Fivla knows precisely when she has done her 20 minutes, down to the last second because she immediately turns in…..

bn2a5171

….. for her reward.

bn2a5173

She spends the rest of her day in the paddock with Tor and Albie with a 30 minute brisk walk to Watness gate and back.  She trots along while I walk fast.  At 18:00, it is back to the stable to wet hay in a small haynet.

I think she is losing weight.

bn2a5176

The Introductions

Fences only seem to get in the way when you want to meet new friends.

bn2a4984

Little Albie is very keen to meet everyone.

bn2a5000

Fivla has become a good second step-mother.  She is slightly more of a motherly friend to Albie than Tor who sees him as her meal ticket she should look after.

bn2a5002

Today was the day we have all been waiting for.

And so we let Silver, Storm and Tiddles into the small field containing Tor, Fivla and Albie.  Waffle joined them later. He was busy on the horizon being mysterious.

Silver was sensible – he introduced himself to Tor first and then was allowed to make friends with Albie.

bn2a5007

bn2a5029

Little Albie was keen to meet everyone new.

bn2a5031

He tried to play “Nibble” with Storm who put his ears back.

bn2a5042

With that, Tor waded in and gave him both barrels.  No one can speak to her Albie like that.

bn2a5049

It was all very interesting to watch.  So much communication and such good behaviour.

bn2a5051

Albie was intrigued with Tiddles.  He had met him very briefly (but probably didn’t remember) when he first arrived at Thordale.

bn2a5063

I think this could be the beginning of a good friendship.

bn2a5068

I hope so.

bn2a5074

Tentative little games.

bn2a5089

Brave introductions.

bn2a5094

Lots of foal mouthing (as it should be).

bn2a5098

And Silver discovered Albie’s rump makes a good chin rest!

bn2a5102

Well that was easy.  Albie is now a fully paid up Minion.

Well, here we all are

Well, here we all are.

‘Bert is beginning to fill out in the right way rather than the wormy-belly way.  He comes up for scratches and chats and he is definitely my Monkey.

bn2a4760 bn2a4763

BeAnne is coming along leaps and bounds.  She jumped up onto my bed this morning and that, for her, is a huge achievement.  She even went on today’s dog walk with Loki and Daisy.

bn2a4765 bn2a4776

Storm and Tiddles have joined the others in the big back field.

bn2a4783

Tiddles is much quieter since his ordeal but he still loves being hugged.

bn2a4795

Delia is enjoying being home.

bn2a4799

Waffle has decided he is “a big black” (Shetland).

bn2a4803

It is an exclusive club and he is very happy pretending.  It is all perspective.

bn2a4811

Fivla is lives with Tor and Albie in the little field.  She works hard twice a day and the weight is slowly coming off.  She is stabled at night.  Anyway, she spends her time outside cantering up and down the fence waving her bottom at Klængur and squealing if anyone looks at her.

bn2a4818

Albie is lonely.  I played with him in the field this afternoon but I am not who he needs.  Tomorrow we will put Tiddles and Storm in.  They should make him smile.

bn2a4832

He likes Fivla but she just does more squealing.

bn2a4844

I keep telling myself I am so glad Albie did not go to the Sales.  That was the original plan, when he first arrived.

I could never let him go away now.
