In Town This Afternoon

Daisy and I spent the afternoon in Lerwick (or the Big L, as we like to call it).

L1230027

Lerwick is the main port of Shetland.

L1230027

There is some great architecture – I am very partial to turrets with crow-stepped gable ends.

L1230012

Small pedestrian lanes radiate outwards from the main street.

L1230016

Commercial Street, although looking rather empty today, is very busy when the large cruise-liners dock (as well as Saturdays).

L1230003

The bunting is out to meet and greet our summer visitors.

L1230010

You never know who you will meet in “da Street:…

L1230018

or what you will see.

L1230020

All the shops make a huge  effort and, I, for one, appreciate that. This is not a high street full of the usual names but somewhere that individual shops do their very best for their customers.

L1230045

The sailing dinghies are moored, ready for the next sailing competition.

L1230024

And then I saw the Dim Riv – their website

L1230029

It is a replica Viking longship built in Shetland in 1980 and run by a group of volunteers. They operate trips around Lerwick harbour from May – September.

Not bad for a day in town!

Playing with the Boys

We needed to help a friend out.

BN2A0648

If you ask, I will never say no (unless of course I have something I can’t get out of like a spinal operation or injection – that sort of thing takes unavoidable preference. Next Wednesday, I will be busy.)

BN2A0650

Anywho, having been asked, we went to help with some stallions.

BN2A0651

They were a bunch of awesome dudes.

BN2A0655

They liked carrots and people – and probably in that order!

BN2A0657

I am a huge fan of stallions.

BN2A0658

They have a great attitude to life.

BN2A0659

Basically, it is black or white.  Nothing else.

(I was responsible for showing this little miniature skewbald colt.  He managed to roll and then sit on his bottom in the show field – he was bored and, funnily enough, we did not win.  Can’t think why not.)

BN2A0663

Stallions have beautiful forelocks.

BN2A0666

Long flowing manes.

BN2A0685

And always tell you what they are thinking – very expressive.

BN2A0712

Some even like to eat amongst purple flowers, whilst still remaining beautiful and manly.

BN2A0667

Their home is this field – huge and many stallions/colts or, as I call them, little boys, norty little boys, happily live there.  With so many stallions and colts together there is lots of playing.

BN2A0680

Even so, they all have their own special friend who they stay with all the time.

BN2A0691

Love is a many splendored thing.

BN2A0702

But it can also involve teeth!

BN2A0703

As I said, dear little boys or norty little boys!  You decide.

Just Found My Autograph Book

Circa 1973 when I was about 10 years old, I was give a purple autograph book.

14089072_10154468126617265_2851067340455350090_n

It is full of autographs.  The usual ditties from my primary and secondary school.

14063932_10154468126667265_4388892863554004361_n

Anyway, I found the book tucked away in a drawer and in it were my autographs.

There are the usual from my family, but there are also a few famous ones from the horse world. My parents once took us to Hickstead in 1973.

Paddy McMahon – he won the European Show Jumping Championships in 1973.

L1220566

Dick Stillwell – a well known trainer of top show jumping and eventing riders.

Jane Holderness Roddam (née Bullen) – a British event rider.  She won Badminton Horse Trials in 1968 and 1978 as well as Burghley Horse Trials in 1976.  She competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, winning team gold for Great Britain.

L1220569

The luscious Richard Meade – Britain’s most successful equestrian Olympian. He was a triple Olympic gold medalist and the first British rider to win an individual Olympic title. He also won five World Championship medals, including team golds in 1970 and 1982.

L1220572

Marion Mould (née Coakes) – an English show-jumper. She competed for Great Britain at the 1968 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the individual jumping event.  She was also the owner and rider of the famous Stroller (14.1 hands bay gelding), who  jumped one of the only two clear rounds in the Olympic individual championship. In 1967, Marion rode Stroller to victory in the Hickstead Derby, the only pony to have ever won this event.  Stroller was a legend and I remember we all aspired to be Marion and Stroller in our childhood dreams.

L1220575

George Hobbs – show jumper

L1220577

And, lastly, Chris Collins – show jumper.

L1220580

These autographs have brought back some good childhood memories.

(Other autographs include Peter Pears, Murray Perahia and Imogen Holst – but that’s for another day!)

Lambie’s needs a modelling career.

I am suffering from yesterday – I need to rest.

L1220961

So, today’s blog will be short.

L1220962

Everyone is fine.

L1220964

Lambie is being special.

L1220974

He is practising his “noble prow”.

L1220972

From both sides.

L1220977

In fact, if there was a sheep modelling agency, Lambie would be signed up immediately.

L1220979

Lambie is truly perfect.

L1220980

He could even be a screen-saver – (let me know if you want me to send you a copy of the photo!)

L1220983

‘Ster was in one of his aloof “everyone-could-be-a-murderer” moods.

L1220984

I could be bothered with talking him out of it, so I took my camera to photograph little Albie drinking his lunch.

L1220988

I particularly wanted to share with you Albie’s “lovely” milky whiskers.

The Viking Shetland Pony Show 2016

Every year the Shetland Pony Breeders of Shetland host The Viking Shetland Pony Show.

BN2A9833

Today it took place at the Cunningsburgh Show Ground – a new venue from usual but one that worked very well.

There were three rings – the Ridden Shetland pony ring…..

BN2A9911 BN2A0443 BN2A0466

The Standard Shetland pony ring….

BN2A0020BN2A9944

And the Miniature Shetland pony ring.

BN2A0195BN2A0129 BN2A0283

There was winning…..

BN2A0144

… and smiling.

BN2A0158

Good horsemanship

BN2A0175BN2A9884

Expertly shown ponies.

BN2A0390BN2A9879

As well as foals that looked like teddy bears!

BN2A0216

New friends were introduced

BN2A0161

Tentatitive friendships made

BN2A0164

while Mutual Admiration Societies were formed!

BN2A0236 BN2A0238

Leaky bucets hauled.

BN2A0300

The rain, it did fall.  Oh, how it poured.

BN2A0302

One pony was determined to spend her day sitting down getting more and more filthy.

BN2A9835

Lauren was given the job to help!

BN2A0304

The judges worked hard.

BN2A9973

Apparently the sun shone briefly – I do not remember this.

BN2A9997

And on the other side of the road, there was the Mind Your Head Fun Run and Walk.  For me, the words “Fun” and “Run” do not work well together in the same sentence.

BN2A0345

But, despite the god-awful weather, there was good turnout and everyone went at a fair pace.

BN2A0348

Photos were taken (I can vouch for that).

BN2A0577

A film crew was present (along with BeAnne’s most favourite toy furry animal ever).

BN2A0579

And winners made – Snelsmore Karisma, the Overall Reserve Champion from Bergli Shetland Pony Stud.  Note, all Lauren’s efforts were rewarded.  One beautiful pure white and black Shetland pony as opposed to the green version she wanted to be.

BN2A0624 BN2A0637

I am exhausted.  Totally dead.  I need my bed.

BN2A9838

And this is my most favourite photo of the day.
