Cabin Fever

It’s been an ambient (read ferocious) Force 8, gusting 10 all day.  When the F10 (55–63 mph) hit, it really hit hard but I was beginning to get cabin fever so I needed out.  I drove to our village  to get some local messages and then went to find some good waves to photograph.

This is at our local beach – Dale.

“Very high waves with long overhanging crests; resulting foam in great patches is blown in dense white streaks along the direction of the wind; on the whole the surface of the sea takes on a white appearance; rolling of the sea becomes heavy; visibility affected.” – Wikipedia

And then I drove home feeling glad I had been out but even gladder I was going home.

We live about 1/2 hour drive from the (world?) famous Maverick’s surf break in Half Moon Bay, CA, which had historically big and ferocious waves during and just after Christmas. We were out tidepooling south of there (at a usually tranquil beach) at a super low tide on Christmas Day, with the breakers slamming into the abrupt wall of the exposed reef…goodness, the huge explosions of water and sound as the bigger waves hit! 2-3 stories high above a reef standing only about 1-2 feet out of the water. I imagine Shetland gets slammed with such powerful waves rather frequently, but in my lifetime in California, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Here is some of the epic surfing from that week:

Yesterday (24 Jan ‘24) was the 40th anniversary of the Macintosh computer! The Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley held a great event with 3 panels discussing the creation, marketing, and impact of the Mac. You might enjoy watching some of it (it’s ~2 hours long). My hubs is the middle fellow on the 3rd panel (at about 1:20:00), but it all makes more sense (and is more fun) in the context of the whole video.

Apple film = brilliant. Thank you. Richard was wearing his Apple hat in Lerwick and the Tesco cashier told him he was cool!
