A Lerwick Day

Tuesday morning is, and always should be, Flute Lesson Day.

I have been playing the flute since I was 13 and my weekly flute lesson is the highlight of my week.  I get to exercise my little grey cells.

Since Daisy is home, she comes with me and we torture, sorry play, as a trio.

Afterwards, we go to Lerwick for our messages.

Despite being almost winter, Lerwick strives to be colourful.

This is probably the world’s smallest Boots, the Chemist – a UK pharmacy chain, with outlets in most high streets, shopping centres and airport terminals. Did you know it is owned by Walgreens?  Now I never knew that!

l1240763

We don’t have the big name shops names up here.

l1240774

I like that.

l1240776

Individuality.

l1240778

And some of the best (or interesting) window-displays too!

Vitamin and Fivla are still featuring in the shops.

They certainly made a lasting impact.

Taktur is even there too (so proud, sniff).

Commercial Street is the main shopping street in Lerwick.  These days, it is not busy.  I haven’t been during the weekend for a while, so I can only hope that more folk use it or we will lose our high street, which will be a bad day.  I try as hard as I can to support The Street.

From Commercial Street, there are lanes that run at right angles from it leading to houses and join other streets.

There is also a tree growing in a wall!

Daisy asked me to take this photo.  It is grows on Fort Charlotte.l1240809

Anywho, here are a few happy snaps from today.  Wool (leftover from Wool Week) and Hallowe’en are the theme.

I love the tree in the wall. It’s surviving despite the odds – it can’t have much soil to grow in. Was the High Street busier in years past? It would be awful if shops started to close. Love to Tiddles.

Every other shop, just about, is empty and closed. Very very sad. This is the crime of internet shopping and Tesco’s imho.

Wonderful pictures as usual, Frances. Makes me want to visit! How long does it take on the ferry? (Pathetic, perhaps, but I won’t get in an aeroplane!)

Absolutely lovely photos. I live far away in California, but I long to come to Scotland. Visit the whole of it, but especially Shetland. Thank you for your blog.

Gosh, I think I want everything in the photo with Vitamin and Fivla on a towel!! And the jigsaw puzzles, and some ponies in hand knit sweaters, and a makkin belt with long needles, and hand carder a, and that hat and those slippers and….

I had NO IDEA your horses were on tea towels!! I do need some to complement my overstuffed drawer of tea towels. Is there any online ordering for that shop?

I think Commercial St. should join in on t’internet and let us buy fabulous Shetland items. I’ve tried to find any of the shops online with no success as yet.

Email me your list or I could do a Shetland pony things in town blog if you want and then you can make up your shopping lists!

Great photos. You have a really good eye and instinct for composition. I feel like I’ve had a small vacation after viewing your blog each day. Thanks.

You may regret telling Blogland you will shop for us! But once again YOUR photos make me want to visit. So once my high school play opens next week, it is off to the travel agent for help getting from Connecticut to Shetland.
